Complacency is the enemy of greatness. It’s easy to stick to a comfortable discipline that’s become familiar. It’s challenging to step outside one’s comfort zone into a new territory. Despite the latter’s initial potential awkwardness, seeking it is a sign of progress. Brooklyn’s rising spitter, Kalonji of the NYC LAW$, is using his new track, “TRU$T” featuring Bones Baybee, off his upcoming debut solo project, SpedX, to showcase his versatility and fear of complacency.

Kalonji typically spits over traditional Hip Hop beats that comfortably support his deep, slightly raspy flow. This classic production coupled with his New York sound normally yield impressive results, and is seemingly a winning formula. However, the BK rapper is still grinding daily to match his status with his talent, encouraging him to alter his musical approach by stepping outside his comfort zone.

“TRU$T” mixes cloud, bubbly production with Kalonji’s normal BK-drenched flow to create an entertaining, new-wave sounding record. This track is a victory lap, featuring Kalonji and Bones Baybee having fun discussing how a girl’s conventional politeness transforms into a freaky attitude once she’s in their presence. And in case the lyrics don’t evidence their tangible enjoyment, Kalonji sports a youthful smile as he happily rides a bike throughout the video while delivering his bars. While this new-wave sound is an adopted aesthetic for Kalonji, he shows promise in this arena.

Peep the video above, and be on the look out for Kalonji’s upcoming debut project, SpedX.
