Like most adults, Bridget Perez squints at the morning’s blinding sun, fights a losing battle with the alarm clock and reluctantly makes her way to work—a homecare provider for elderly and blind individuals. She serves as their lifeline. From preparing their food to doing their errands, Bridget is paramount in these folks’ lives. However, unlike most adults, after the clock strikes five Bridget isn’t going home to veg out or drink away the day’s pain; she is suiting up for her second job: Music.

As a classically trained musician, Bridget is well-versed in the clarinet, trumpet, flute, saxophone (soprano and tenner) and piano. Funny, I thought I was talented because I can almost play one guitar riff of “Ironman”—perspective. Her musical prowess granted her admission to LaGuardia performing arts high school and eventually Berklee College of Music. This instrumentation expertise, coupled with supportive friends, gave her the confidence to pursue her true passions: singing, song-writing and production.

Despite having a musical background closer to Mozart than Swizz Beatz, Bridget’s catalogue retains a strong synth presence as well as conventional R&B/Hip-hop beats. She fully utilizes her musical pallet by infusing classical traditions to create an organic, deep sound. But production only comprises half of Bridget’s musical chemistry; the other side resides in her singing and song-writing.

She is a strong writer and the core of her content revolves around love’s beauty and evil. But be warned: Bridget writes extremely catchy hooks that you won’t be able to stop singing. I catch myself humming “All the Time’s” hook “that dick be bomb” under my breath—pause; that shit’s dangerous! My co-workers probably think I’m sexually confused…  “Taunting Me/Miss U” is a great representation of her synth-style production and tug-of-war battle with love.  These themes are further explored on her mixtape series: Into the Sky (a two-part project) and Excrements (a three-part installation). But it’s not all love and war with Bridget; she like to have fun too.

We spent close to 20-minutes talking about a mutual passion: Weed. Oh, how I love weed.  In Seth Rogen’s words, “Everyone likes smoking weed…It makes everything better. Makes food better. Makes music better. It makes sex feel better, for God's sakes.” Spot on Seth, spot on. Bridget made us both jealous as she informed us of Khalifa Kush’s (KK) euphoric high that we’ve yet to experience; we exchanged stories; favorite smoking techniques; you know, your run-in-the-mill weed conversation. But I digress… You know who else loves weed? The Flatbush Zombies!

Bridget grew up with Erick the Architect's friend Jermaine who later connected the two (see, that wasn’t a totally crazy non sequitur). Eventually, she was invited to pen the bridge for the Flatbush Zombies jam, “222”, off the album, BetterOffDead. Bridget recalled that experience as incredible, humbling and inspirational and she learned that sometimes, teamwork really does make the dream work. The Zombies are an incredible trio who are challenging today’s music business conventions, proving that underground groups are necessary.

I’m curious to watch Bridget’s career play out. She has the musical chops and experience to make a go at this, but, in all honesty, so do a lot of aspiring SoundCloud rappers/musicians. However, Bridget has a quality that you can’t teach: Likability. She’s a sweet girl who adequately straddles the line of humility and confidence. I don’t know what her future holds, but I do know this: Bridget won’t’ stop hustlin’ until her second job becomes her main job.
