“Drove U Crazy” by Gucci Mane featuring Bryson Tiller
The East Atlanta Santa comes bearing gifts. Hooking up with Bryson Tiller on the newest cut off his upcoming studio release, East Atlanta Santa, Gucci delivers on “Drove U Crazy.” Zaytoven’s “Dance With The Devil”-esque production allows Tiller’s R&B flair to complement Guwop’s trap sound, creating an interesting musical cocktail.
I think prison had a positive effect on Gucci. He’s in shape, putting out more work than ever, and is more technically refined. He’s spitting at a higher level by crisply articulating his thoughts while still retaining his iconic twang. Maybe it’s kicking the lean. Whatever it is, keep it up Wop—expecting big things for East Atlanta Santa.
“Shine” by Quavo
Eery strings welcome us to Quavo’s grim precautionary message of identifying people gunning for your spotlight. He struggles distinguishing between genuine friends and the leeches who latch on to promote their interests. At just over two-minutes, “Shine” is a solid representation of Quavo’s solo work, and begs him to deliver more.
I’ve said it before: I really hope Quavo leaves Migos. He’s capable of generating trap hits that straddle Hip Hop’s evolving identity without robbing its integrity. With “Trapstar” recently dropping and now “Shine,” Quavo is demonstrating legitimate solo potential.
“Tired” by G Herbo featuring Lil Bibby
G Herbo comes firing on “Tired,” the seventh track off his latest mixtape, Strictly 4 My Fans. While I definitely recommend checking out the entire project, “Tired” is a must listen. His nimble flow loosely navigates the production, tiptoeing the sideline without stepping out of bounds.
DJ L Beats’ heart-pounding instrumental meets G Herbo and Lil Bibby’s passionate cry of anger towards their crippling home environment. From losing true friends to not being able to shake the fakes, Herbo is fed up. He and Bibby have sacrificed endlessly for their success, knowing that only a voracious work ethic will lead to a prosperous life.
“Muslim Wedding (Statik Selektah Remix)” by Action Bronson
Statik Selektah is Hip Hop’s Edward Scissor Hands. He consistently creates synergistic hits by housing one song’s soul under a new musical roof. Replacing the original Harry Fraud production with a dynamic beat, Statik reimagines Action Bronson’s Blue Chips hit, “Muslim Wedding.”
Due to their frequent collaborations, Statik is well acquainted with Bronson’s flow and aesthetic, allowing him to provide tailor made instrumentals. This remix is an impressive addition to their joint catalogue.
“Madonnna” by 24hrs featuring Dwn2Earth
Do you know who 24hrs is? Don’t worry—me neither up until five-minutes ago. The Atlanta product is brand new to the scene, but is quickly elevating his brand by working with big names, like Ty Dolla $ign and Wiz Khalifa on his recent track, “What You Like.” His flow sounds like a Quavo-Young Thug love child—it’s slightly intoxicating. And I think I like it.
24hrs plays it safe with the content on “Madonna,” by comfortably discussing conventional trap themes of white girls, smoking loud and chasing paper. No, he’s reinventing the wheel by any means, but with little experience, 24hrs is making big strides. His homie Dwn2Earth also delivers a decent verse to round out the track. Expect this guy to be popping up frequently.
